Plot Decryptor: Guess the Movie from a Redacted Synopsis

How to play

A film's official synopsis appears with most letters redacted into black blocks. Word lengths, punctuation and a scattering of revealed characters are your first clues, alongside the genre, decade and two top-billed stars.

Type your guess and submit. A wrong answer triggers a decrypt cycle that reveals more characters across the whole synopsis. You have five cycles before the plot is fully decrypted and the round is lost.

Use the manual decrypt hint to reveal a single word of your choosing if you're close but need one more clue. Hints cost points.

Play the Daily for the same film as everyone else, or Endless for an unlimited supply of plots. Share your result grid, spoiler-free, when you're done.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the plot summaries come from?

Synopses are the official overviews from The Movie Database (TMDB), redacted in your browser. Character and actor names are redacted along with everything else.

How many guesses do I get in Plot Decryptor?

Five decrypt cycles. Each wrong guess reveals more of the text, so the game gets easier the longer it goes, but your score drops.

Which films appear in Plot Decryptor?

Well-known films with recognisable plots: top-rated and popular titles from the 1970s onwards. You won't be asked to identify a film nobody has heard of.

Can I play Plot Decryptor more than once a day?

Yes. The Daily is one film per day, but Endless mode is unlimited.
